Home Portable Air Conditioners

The home portable air conditioner does not have to be mounted inside a window, but it does have to be near a window so that it can be vented. Instead of occupying an entire window and blocking out most of the light, the portable unit has a pair of hoses for input and output, which are mounted to a small plate that fits nicely into a narrow opening of the window. Home portable air conditioners can be found in a variety of sizes, so before you buy, estimate the size of space that needs cooling and choose accordingly. You can calculate how many BTUs will be needed by allowing 20 BTUs per square foot. Bigger is not necessarily better; an air conditioner that is too large for a room will give it a damp, cold feeling. However, a machine that isn’t large enough will be running constantly without cooling the room enough.

Expensive central air conditioning systems aren’t always the best solution. In regions that have short summers and long cold winters, many people simply feel that the cost of installing a central unit isn’t justifiable for the short length of time that it would be used. Instead, a portable unit can keep you cool during the few months that it’s needed, and you can easily store it the rest of the year. For comfort year-round, all-in-one air conditioning and heating units can provide heat in the wintertime, cooling in the summertime and also can function as a fan or a dehumidifier when necessary.

When you purchase a home air conditioner, you should consider a few features besides just convenience and price. A good air conditioner should operate quietly, have easy to use controls and an air filter that is removable and easy to clean. Other desirable features include adjustable air speed and vents as well as a programmable timer that lets you schedule times for the unit to turn on and off.
